Technology in Early Education
The other day in our ECE class we were talking about the fact that teachers are always learning. Someone mentioned that teachers should especially be learning in technology because it is progressing so rapidly. A heated debate started up about whether or not we should be teaching technology at such a young age. Some people argued that we shouldn't because they should learn to use a card catalogue in the library and learn how to use books. The other side of the argument was yes, they should know how to use books, but they should also know how to use technology to the best of their advantage and the most efficient as possible.
> I agree with the second argument because with the rate technology is moving most of our daily activities can be accomplished more effectively with the assistance of technology. I also think that as technology continues advancing we will be using it more and more and if a student is not able to use a computer with the same skills as the other children then they will be disadvantaged. Just as children are today in reading, numbers, etc.

Hi Kristina, I have to agree with what you said. I think that it is important as Jayne had said in a discussion posting that a "balance" is necessary. As teachers I think that we can ensure that we are teaching our learners both ends of the spectrum! Happy Thanksgiving, Jane.
I have to mention a point that Alec made in one of our classes. He said that we probably won't remember much of what is taught in this course but if we can learn how to effectively use search engines then we can find out how to do something. I think this is important to remember when technological advancements occur every second. The only thing I worry about is our reliance on technology and lack of memory use. For example, I just click on the name of the person I want to email or call. I don't need to know the person's information because it is stored in my email account or my cell phone. What concerns me about this in regards to education is how can we find that balance that both Jayne and Jane mentioned? Instead of thinking about learning as how much a person can store in one's head, perhaps we should be measuring one's creativity. It is my opinion that technology can assist creative development and should be introduced at a young age. And just to add to the debate from Kristina's class, who really believes that card catalogues will last? Technology will replace the card catalogue completely. It has in many schools. Card catalogue stands are now being used as furniture in one's home.
